Unemployment: Finding Positives in a Situation I’d Rather Not Be In

I write this while filled with insert emotion of the day: existential exhaustion with a sprinkle of forced optimism, trying to clutch at straws to find the silver linings of a situation I never planned for. But hey, here we are. So, here are some positives and a few tips to survive unemployment.

The (Sort of) Positives of Unemployment

  1. I Can Wake Up and Sleep Whenever I Want
In theory, this should be amazing, right? No alarms, no rigid schedule. But as someone who actually thrives on routine, the novelty wears off fast. A lack of structure can be strangely draining. But hey, at least I don’t have to set a 6 AM alarm. Small wins.
  2. Broadened Horizons (or at Least That’s What People Say)
Everyone tells me rejection is just redirection. Sure. Let’s go with that. The constant no’s have given me time to consider other options—maybe even different career paths. Since one industry won’t take me, maybe another will? Who knows!
  3. A Forced Refresh on My Knowledge
Job searching means revisiting company websites, researching industries, and—surprise – learning new things in the process. The other day, I found myself deep-diving into a biotech company’s website, listening to podcasts about mRNA technology and genetic engineering. It took me right back to my third year of uni (crazy how much you forget). AI in pharmaceuticals? Didn’t know I cared, but here we are.

Look, I know there’s a passive-aggressive undertone to this whole thing, but the reality is, unemployment comes with highs and lows. Some days, you can see the positives, other days, you’d rather not be in this position at all. But for now, I’ll take what I can get and carry on celebrating the small wins.
